MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER & DIRECTOR

With a deep sense of purpose and responsibility, I laid the foundation of FIRST. It was conceived with a simple yet powerful belief: meaningful social transformation is possible only when rigorous academic inquiry is effectively connected with real-world policy action. Registered in Delhi as a pioneering not-for-profit company, the Foundation stands committed to strengthening this vital bridge between knowledge and governance.

India, today is navigating complex socio-political, economic, cultural, and developmental transitions. Addressing these challenges demands an interdisciplinary approach—one that transcends conventional academic boundaries and engages directly with policy formation, policy analysis, policy efficiency, and implementation outcomes. FIRST embodies this comprehensive vision.

Guided by our motto, “Exploring Perspectives and Shaping the Future,” we aspire to serve as a dynamic platform for learners, scholars, policymakers, and youth leaders who are invested in building an inclusive, democratic, and resilient nation.

At The core of FIRST lies in a commitment to interdisciplinary research and evidence-based policy analysis. As a policy research institution and think-tank, we undertake rigorous fieldbased studies, surveys, and empirical research on public policy design, governance mechanisms, programme implementation, and their social impact.

Our core aim is to closely observe and understand the transformations in the lives of the downtrodden— particularly tribal communities, Dalits, women, and people living in Scheduled geographically remote, rural, hilly, and marginalised regions.

Over the decades, successive governments have introduced numerous policies and welfare programmes with the stated objectives of reducing poverty and hunger, promoting inclusion, and bridging socio-economic gaps across different sections of society. However, despite these efforts, the outcomes on the ground have often remained limited, uneven, and far from satisfactory.

“

I wish to do something Great and Wonderful, but I must start by doing the little things like they were Great and Wonderful.

The gap between policy intent and policy impact continues to challenge the promise of social justice and equitable development. Recognising this disconnect, the Foundation for Interdisciplinary Study and Social Transformation (FIRST) is committed to critically analysing both policy frameworks and lived realities. Our approach emphasises field-based research and evidence-driven assessments across urban, rural, Scheduled, hilly, and remote areas to understand why policies succeed or fail, how implementation gaps emerge, and what corrective measures can ensure meaningful outcomes.

MESSAGE

It is with immense pride and vision that I share the story of The Foundation for Interdisciplinary Research and Social Transformation (FIRST) a pioneering not-for-profit registered in Delhi, India, dedicated to bridging the gap between rigorous academic inquiry and tangible policy impact.

In an era where India's socio-political, economic, cultural, and developmental challenges demand bold, integrated solutions, FIRST stands as a beacon. Our motto, "Exploring Perspectives and Shaping the Future," encapsulates our commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research that empowers learners, policymakers, and youth leaders drive meaningful change.

As co-founder, my own journey in gender and public administration deeply informs FIRST's ethos. Having authored Democratic Decentralization and Empowerment of Women Post the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, I have long championed the transformative power decentralized governance in amplifying women's voices at the grassroots level.

This work, rooted in India's constitutional framework, reveals how local self-governance can dismantle barriers to equity, foster inclusive decision-making, and propel social justice core pillars that resonate with FIRST's mandate.

At FIRST, we weave such perspectives into a broader tapestry: blending political theory, public policy, and youth leadership to address pressing issues like federalism, public health, and social equity.

Whether through ethnographic studies, policy simulations, or collaborative forums, we equip the next generation to not just analyze challenges but to shape solutions that endure.

Together, we can explore diverse perspectives and architect a future of equity,.

MESSAGE

The Foundation for Interdisciplinary Research and Social Transformation (FIRST) was conceived from a simple yet urgent conviction: that rigorous academic inquiry must meaningfully engage with the realities of society and inform the policies that shape our collective future.

India’s contemporary challenges whether socio-political, economic, cultural, or developmental cannot be understood through singular disciplinary lenses. FIRST is therefore rooted in an interdisciplinary ethos that encourages dialogue across fields, methodologies, and perspectives.

Our motto, “Exploring Perspectives and Shaping the Future,” is not merely aspirational; it reflects a commitment to inquiry that is both critical mand constructive, grounded in evidence yet responsive to lived realities.

My own academic journey has deeply shaped this vision. Recent research on the Geographical Indications of Himachal Pradesh reinforced the importance of place-based knowledge, cultural heritage, and spatial understanding in informing governance, development, and policy outcomes.

As a member of The National Association of Geographers, I have consistently engaged with the idea that exploration of spaces, ideas, and social structures is central to meaningful research. This spirit of exploration lies at the heart of FIRST.

FIRST seeks to serve as a dynamic platform for learners, researchers, and young leaders who are deeply invested in governance, public policy, and social research. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and nurturing youth leadership, we aim to translate academic insights into practical interventions that contribute to a more equitable and informed society.

As we move forward, FIRST remains committed to cultivating critical thinking, encouraging innovative research, and supporting policy-relevant scholarship. We invite scholars, practitioners, and students alike to join us in this collective endeavour to explore perspectives, challenge assumptions, and actively participate in shaping the future.
